Trekking in Nepal (Tea House):

This information will help you with the final preparation for your short trek in Nepal. Please read it carefully and be sure you understand where you should go to begin your trek. We have organized your trek as carefully as possible, but there are a few final items you must consider to help us make your trek a success.

PREPARATIONS.

Visa
A visa is required to enter Nepal except for Indian nationals. A single entry visa for 60 days can be obtained from any Royal Nepalese Embassy or Consulate upon payment of US$ 30.

Trekking Permit.
The visitors who intend to trek in Annapurna, Everest and Langtang region do not require trek permit. However, to trek in these region, you need to pay a certain fee to the National Parks or Conservation Area with a copy of your passport. The fee is usually included in the trip cost.

Besides those areas, you require a permit to trek in other regions such as Dolpo, Kangchenjunga, Manslu, Simikot, Upper Mustang and upper Dolpo Please provide your passport to the tour officer up on arrival with your two photos each so that a trekking permit can be prepared for you. This permit is necessary for these trekking areas and will be checked at the airport and at police check posts during the trek. You should carry it with you at all times..

Clothing and Equipment
You have already been provided with a list of the items you will need for your trek. Of most important are:

  • Sleeping bag (note that tents and mattresses are provided by us)
  • Rucksack
  • Duffel bag for items to be carried by porters
  • Down jacket - it will be quite cold (0 degrees C) at high altitudes
  • Sun glasses or goggles - very important in case of snow
  • Water bottle - this will be your only source of cold drinking water

All of the above items can be rented and bought in Kathmandu at shops in Thamel. Remember that most shops require a deposit to assure that you will return the equipment. Do not use your passport as a deposit.

We are often asked whether a down jacket and boots are necessary. A down jacket is always necessary on Everest treks and from November to March on other treks; other times it is optional. Boots may never be needed, but on all treks there is the possibility of snow; if you have boots you can continue in snow. Otherwise you may be forced to turn back. Other than snow, the treks may all be done in tennis or running shoes.

Packing

You should arrange your equipment so that it consists of 3 pieces of luggage:

  1. Your duffel bag which will be carried by porters on the trek. In your duffel bag should go items which you will not need during the day - extra film, your sleeping bag, extra clothing, toilet kit etc. You will not be able to get anything from your duffel bag after you leave camp in the morning until you reach the next camp in the evening.
  2. Your rucksack which should contain items you will need each day - camera, water bottle, a sweater or jacket, first aid kit, trekking permit, etc. Do not overload your rucksack; you are here to enjoy the trek, not to carry huge loads! The porters will carry all your heavy equipment.
  3. Extra baggage which you will need on the trek should be left at your hotel. Most hotels in Kathmandu will store your baggage for free.

Departure for the Trek
The specific departure instructions depend on the destination of the trek as described below. It is your responsibility to be at the meeting point at the time shown. If you are late, you could easily miss the transportation to the start of your trek. Treks in the Everest region : Your departure is by plane to Lukla in the early morning. The flight time is determined only the evening before the flight, so you must check the time with our office the day before departure. You must be at the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport at least one hour before the flight departure time. If you are not at the airport on time, your seat will be cancelled; we suggest you leave your hotel 1-½ hours before the scheduled departure time.

At the airport you should check in with the representative of Himalayan Journeys who will see that you and your baggage are checked in on the flight. In spite of the early hour and the great rush to get to the airport on time, there is a good possibility of delays in the departure of the flight. Delays may also be experienced due to bad weather at Lukla. But you must not count on such delays; it is important to be at the airport on time.

In order to simplify the check - in process for the flight, we shall keep your plane tickets until our representative has assured that all formalities have been followed at the airport. When you arrive at Lukla, another representative of Himalayan Journeys will meet you. Please hand over the return portion of your plane ticket to him so that he may reconfirm your return flight to Kathmandu.

Treks from Pokhara… If you are traveling by plane, you must be at the airport one hour before the flight time. Our office will inform you of the scheduled flight time the day before the trek. If you are traveling to pokhara by bus, you should leave one day before the trek starts and stay in a hotel in Pokhara. You should check in at the Himalayan Journeys office in Pokhara, across from the airport, by 9 am on the day of the trek to meet the sardar and trek staff.
Langtang and other treks depart Kathmandu by Land Rover: If you are traveling by plance, you must be at the airport one hour before the flight time. Our tour officer will inform the day before the flight date the pick up time from the hotel. If you are traveling by bus, jeep or car, then the departure time is 7 AM from your hotel for most of the treks. Please check it with your tour officer the day before the departure of the trek.
